Detroit local partners with high school to mold, recruit apprentices

Juniors, seniors finding higher education in sheet metal apprenticeship

DETROIT – Four years ago, Local 80 began working with Fraser High School in Fraser, Michigan in hopes of recruiting some of its welding students to the apprenticeship. What they ended up with is a partnership rooted in helping young men and women find their futures.

College Credit

Your Building Trades Apprenticeship Completion Certificate is worth college credit!

An articulation agreement exists between Macomb Community College and the Sheet Metal Workers' Local 80 Joint Apprenticeship Fund. Graduates of the Building Trades Apprenticeship program will receive 32 credit hours towards an Associates of Arts degree in General Studies. Your Completion Certificate is all you need. Oakland Community College offers 22 credit hours towards Associate in Applied Science – Construction management.

Washetnau County Comminity College offers 26 Credit Hours of Trade Related credits

Efforts are ongoing to establish articulation agreements with St Clair County Community College, Wayne County Community College and Henry Ford Community College.


 

Veterans

Congress passed, and President Obama has signed into law, the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011. Included in this new law is the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). VRAP offers up to 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans. The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and the Department of Labor (DOL) are working together to roll out this new program on July 1, 2012.
